The snow storm that wasn’t, and other happenings

For all those who have been worried: We survived the great Snowquester of 2013. It was rough at times, but we hankered down with our economy pack of toilet paper from Costco and made do.

Just kidding; the storm was a bust and is now being referred to as the “Noquester” of 2013. *shrug* I’ll admit, I’m a five year old at heart and was incredibly disappointed for a bit yesterday when it became clear that the snow wasn’t meant to be. But, I put on my big-girl pants and decided to make the best of it. It was, after all, a day off from work, and that is not to be taken lightly! My slightly growing (but definitely there!) baby belly has rendered many clothes in my closet un-wearable, and since we’re moving in a few weeks, anyway, I packed virtually everything away into suitcases. I got to my pair of skinny jeans and said, “THIS is my goal! I want to see how soon after giving birth I can wear these!” And then I did the same holding up my favorite summer dress and my favorite skirt, and finally I realized that after giving birth I’m going to, you know, have a baby to take care of and whatnot, and I’m also going to be incredibly sore in places most ladies don’t like to talk about, so I screwed the goal-making, packed the tiny clothes with their uncomfortable buttons and zippers up and thanked the good lord for stretchy running shorts and yoga pants. I’ll work out through pregnancy and as soon after birth as possible, and I plan on breastfeeding, which burns quite a few calories on its own, so I’m confident the weight will come off. In the meantime, I’m going to stick with the philosophy that a comfortable mommy is a happy mommy and a happy mommy is a good mommy.

(I hope so, at least!)

And then what does a girl do once she packs away a bunch of clothes that no longer fit? Why, she bakes cookies, of course! Now, I know it seems like I’ve done a lot of baking (which is true—does this count as nesting??), but I want it to be known that we don’t keep any other junk food in the house—no chips, certainly no store-bought cookies (as IF.) (There *is* gelato in the freezer that I was craving and whining about, and then I finally got it and after a bite or so it sort of turned my stomach. Neal can’t eat it in all of its lactose-laden glory, but I refuse to throw it out because one little pint cost as much as half a gallon of his lactose-free stuff.) Plus, we eat pretty healthy overall—lots of veggies and protein (and, okay, lots of baked potatoes, too. Whatever. Baby likes carbs as much as his/her momma does!) So, yes, since I’ve been pregnant, I like to keep baked goods in the house, but we’re moderating, I’m exercising on a pretty much daily basis at this point, and my weight gain is right on track.

Speaking of exercising, I managed to get my buns out of bed for an early morning workout with a friend living next door (how convenient is that?) My running tights are starting to PUSH it—I roll the top down under the belly, but they still aren’t very comfortable, and I refuse to buy any cooler weather maternity workout wear because I’ll use them for, like, a week. I might just have to brave the cold for a while and stick with my shorts!

Anyway…happy Thursday!! We may not have gotten any snow, but we’ve got sunshine, and that’s close enough.

  1. I think all women’s clothes should be as comfortable as maternity clothes! Tight waistbands on pants should all be elastic instead.

When you’re breastfeeding you actually have to eat 500 more calories a day to make milk without hurting your body (which I was happy about since I love eating haha)… And I’ve recommended this book to everyone I know who’s a first time mom who wants to BF. It didn’t come as naturally to me as I thought it would and without this book I’m not sure I would ave been able to do it past the first few weeks! The Nursing Mother’s Companion was a lifesaver.

Sounds like you’re having fun being pregnant! I love it! Are you planning on a natural birth?

  2. I *love* being pregnant! The first trimester was a little iffy, but now I couldn’t be happier. :-) I’m planning on a natural birth and have started to do some reading on what to expect. I’ll definitely check out the Nursing Mother’s Companion! I always thought breastfeeding was intuitive, but from what I’ve read so far on blogs and forums, it can be a bit tricky at first.

  3. You have a very good philosophy!! Comfy mommy definitely makes for a happy mommy – even when your kids are 8 and 17 months! And speaking of exercising, would you like a pair of size medium maternity running shorts? I have no need for them anymore and if you’d like them, just let me know!

  4. A wise friend once told me to give myself at least six months to get back to “fighting weight” after having a baby. Good advice. Everyone’s body responds to pregnancy in different ways. For some people, the obnoxious ones (ha, ha), they get back to the little hips and tiny jeans eventually. Others of us have hips that liked the flexed out position and kept that, and realistically, once the skin stretches out, sometimes it (shall we say) loses elasticity. No doubt you will be one of the determined ones who will look fabulous, but you will also have a day when your husband comes home from work and you are still in your pajamas with uncombed hair and no shower. He will have to be taught, and taught well, NOT to ask, “So what did you do all day?”

    • Thanks for the advice, Sue! :-) Giving things at least six months makes sense–we’ll have lots of adjusting to do as parents and a new family of three, so I’m guessing weight will be the LAST thing on my mind!
And I read the comment aloud to the father-to-be, but his momma raised him well, so I don’t think I have to worry about him asking any such questions. ;-)
